Choosing the Right Ceremony Tone

This is where many couples get stuck

Couples often ask:

“Do ceremonies have to be serious?”

“Is humour okay?”

“What if we don’t want something traditional?”

The answer is simple:

Your ceremony can sound however you sound.

There’s no single “right” tone

Ceremony tone usually falls somewhere along a spectrum:

  • Serious & reflective - calm, grounded, meaningful

  • Sentimental - emotional, story-driven, heartfelt

  • Light & fun – relaxed, warm, and joyful

Most ceremonies blend all three.

What matters most is consistency

Humour works when it:

  • feels natural

  • fits the couple

  • doesn’t overpower the moment

Serious moments work best when they:

  • feel intentional

  • aren’t stiff or forced

The key is choosing a tone that feels comfortable and holding it consistently.

How couples find their tone

I usually ask couples:

  • How do you want to feel standing up there?

  • How do you want your guests to feel?

  • What moments matter most to you?

You don’t need to have the answers straight away, we find them together.

The celebrant’s role in tone

A good celebrant:

✔ reads the room

✔ adjusts pacing

✔ balances emotion and lightness

✔ keeps things authentic

That’s what prevents awkwardness and helps the moment land.

Final thought

Your ceremony doesn’t need to impress anyone.

It just needs to feel true to you.
